This Level 5 apprenticeship unit is designed to help professionals develop practical knowledge in AI adoption, procurement and governance within organisational settings.

Apprenticeship units are flexible short training programmes created to support organisations in developing workforce skills in areas of growing demand. These units provide focused learning that can be completed over a shorter period while still delivering valuable professional development and workplace impact.

There are a range of AI Leadership Apprenticeship Units available:

Training can be a minimum of 30 – 140 hours hours and is usually delivered over 1 to 16 weeks, allowing organisations and learners to balance study alongside existing responsibilities.

This apprenticeship unit supports individuals and businesses looking to adopt AI technologies responsibly, improve organisational decision-making and establish effective governance and assurance processes for AI systems.

TThis apprenticeship unit is suitable for professionals in leadership or decision-making roles who are responsible for shaping, influencing or supporting AI adoption within their organisation.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this unit, learners will be able to:

  • Evaluate AI solutions and vendors using structured criteria in line with organisational processes, including cost, performance, risk and data readiness.
  • Make informed procurement decisions based on testing, benchmarking and user validation while following organisational policy and governance requirements.
  • Assess risks associated with AI acquisition and implementation, including vendor lock-in, data management, intellectual property and sustainability considerations.
  • Design and implement AI governance frameworks, including clear roles, responsibilities and escalation pathways for AI oversight.
  • Embed ethical, legal and regulatory considerations into organisational AI decision-making processes.
  • Define assurance and compliance processes, including requirements for documentation, auditability, transparency and accountability.
  • Design and implement appropriate human oversight mechanisms for AI systems to support responsible and effective use.

Entry requirements

To enrol on this apprenticeship unit, learners must:

  • Be employed
  • Be aged 19 or over
  • Have an interest in organisational improvement, innovation or digital transformation

Funding

This apprenticeship unit is currently eligible for public funding.

  • Non-levy employers may be eligible for full government funding
  • Levy-paying employers can use existing apprenticeship funding

Delivery

Apprenticeship units are delivered remotely through group or one-to-one sessions using video conferencing platforms. Sessions are arranged to support the apprentice’s learning needs and are scheduled at suitable times throughout the programme.

Assessment

As a minimum, learners will need to pass a skills test delivered by ATL, to demonstrate that they have acquired the skills and knowledge set out in the apprenticeship unit. Employers will need to validate the result to confirm the learner has been successful.
